Southern Belle Movie and Book Week: Gone With the Wind Movie

When it comes to Gone With the Wind it makes more sence to start with the movie since I saw it before I read the book.  I will never forget the first time I saw the movie Gone With the Wind (if I have shared this story with you before sorry).  I was probably in the sixth or seven grade.  By this point in my life I had heard about this epic movie called Gone With the Wind but that was it.  One night while flipping channels at home with my mom, I discovered it was one tv, and it had just really started, it was net yet to the scene where Rhett is standing at the bottom of the staris staring up at Scarlett.  I was told if I wanted to watch it I had to go upstairs to watch it, and since I did not have cable in my room at this time I had to go to my parents room to watch it.  I was a goner the first time I saw Rhett Butler standing there at the bottom of the stairs.  My mom came later in the movie, I am sure expecting to find me asleep, but I was not my eyes were glued to Rhett Butler and Gone With the Wind.  And I can still remember to this day her asking my in shock “are you still watching this?” and my answer being “I love this movie.  It wasn’t until I finished college that I was finally able to find the time and attention needed to read the book and learn that the movie and book had a lot of differences.  More on the book tomorrow.  I think Gone With the Wind is one of those classics that does not get enough air time and part of me wishes in this age of remakes that someone would remake Gone With the Wind but another part of me does not because I know it would not be as good as the original.  There will never be another man who could play Rhett Butler like Clark Gable did.

Gone With the Wind

As I sit here and type I am watching “Gone With the Wind”.  I love this movie!  I will never forget the first time I watched the movie.  I was captivated by it.  I was a goner at the scene where Rhett was standing at the bottom of the stairs staring up at Scarlett at the Wilkes’ Bar-B-Que.  I want a Rhett Butler of my own!  And then when he told her he didn’t give a damn, that was like nothing I had ever seen before, so touching.  Rhett really did love Scarlett and he was willing to walk away from her just because he thought she wanted Ashley more than him.  Sometimes I think what it would be like if they remade this movie today but then there would never be as good of a Rhett Butler as Clark Gable, so they really could not remake this movie.  This movie truly is one of the greatest movies ever and there will never be another.
