About an hour and fifteen minute drive from where we were staying in Vandalia Louisiana was West Monroe Louisiana, home of the Robertson Family and Duck Commander. Let me tell you though, West Monroe is bigger than my home town and the town next to us combined. What I saw of West Monroe it is huge. And the Duck Commander warehouse is less than two miles off the expressway. That’s right I said expressway. We did go to the shop at the Duck Commander warehouse. I bought the four kids something that was it, nothing for myself. We did not see anybody from Duck Dynasty but it was fun to see where Duck Dynasty is filmed. I did recognize a few places that I have seen on the show.
As we all start to prepare to do our Christmas or Holiday Shopping I want to share something with you that I love to give as a gift. (And I love buying for myself too.) It is something you can use daily and a great way to express yourself at the same time. I am talking about Tervis Tumblers. I have seven, my mom has five and I have given one to five people as gifts, so far. More might be coming this year. The seven I have really express me.
Here is a description of them:
OBX with a pair of flip-flops (for my favorite vacation spot the Outer Banks)
Fear the Beard with Jase, Willie, Uncle Si, and Phil
Cupcake (since I like to bake) (this is a water bottle)
Pink Flower ( I love pink and it makes me think of the ocean) (this is a water bottle)
Magnolia’s (make me think Southern Belle)
I use some of them for my coffee and water at work and some of them I use for my coffee just sitting around the house. My mom’s are mostly Disney, Winnie the Pooh and Minnie, but she does have one that says Mom. She has both water bottles and cups too. She uses hers to take her Iced Tea with her to work everyday. The next one I want to purchase for myself is a Jimmie Johnson one but I think I want that in another water bottle. They are always bringing out new designs and they always have seasonal favorites. They have lots of different brands: John Deere, Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Disney, NASCAR, MLB, Duck Commander, Ford, the list goes on and on. So this year express yourself or help somebody express themselves.
Last week I finished “The Duck Commander Family: How Faith, Family, and Ducks Built a Dynasty” by Willie & Korie Robertson. This week I read “Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander” by Phil Robertson. As I said earlier in the week I can’t get enough of Duck Dynasty! I loved these two books! By reading these two books I feel like I know the Robertson Family better. There are some stories that were told in both books but that makes it interesting because they are from different perspectives. It was fun to read how Duck Commander got started. That company really is a labor of love for Phil & Kay and now Willie & Korie. While I liked them both there were parts of Willie’s I liked better but then there were also parts of Phil’s I liked better too. If you are a Duck Dynasty fan I would say these two books are must read. In October there will be another book that will most likely be a must read too, I have already pre-ordered it myself. It is “Si-cology 1: Tales and Wisdom From Duck Dynasty’s Favorite Uncle” by Si Robertson. Now that should be interesting! I can’t wait!
This week I made Duck Commander Cream Cheese Pie. I found the recipe at http://recipesforourdailybread.com/2013/02/18/duck-dynasty-pie-recipe-video/. The website is called Recipes For Our Daily Bread. This is one of Duck Dynasty’s Miss Kay’s recipes. From what I understand it is featured on the Duck Commander DVD. This was really good. In fact I had someone tell me it was better than when I make lemon bars and that person loves it when I make lemon bars. I did do a few things different from what was said/called for on the recipe. Here is what I did different…
1) I doubled the recipe and put it in a 9×13 pan instead of the individual ramekins or a 9 inch pie pan. (I was making it to take to work so I need more than what those two would have provided. So mine were more like Cream Cheese Bars instead of pie.)
2) The crust is made of vanilla wafers, pecans, and butter. I put my vanilla wafers into my Ninja till they were almost powder, then I put the pecans in the Ninja too, which made them almost powder like too. The n before I stirred the butter in I mixed the vanilla wafers and pecans together and then mixed the butter into that mixture.
3) I baked my curst for 20 mins on 325. (I only use an oven at 325, never higher, I just bake a little longer.)
4) I put strawberry pie filling on time.
I must say to me the crust was the best part! I loved it with the strawberry pie filling and don’t know if I would use another kind of pie filling. This is a keeper recipe!
